Powtoon!

This week's topic will focus on self-publishing platforms where I will be sharing tools that are not that well known.

Today's web 2.0 tool is POWTOON! Powtoon is a free (however, the features are limited with the free version) self-publishing tool that allows you to create animated presentations using images, videos, music, and voice recordings. Powtoon has a similar interface as PowerPoint, but it has more pre-made graphics and sounds, along with animation capabilities. From messing around with the tool, I'd say it's great for beginners and best for creating small presentations. Powtoon also provides short tutorials to make your presentation top notch!

PROS:

  • Very straightforward and easy to use.
  • You can use templates or create your own!
  • You can include gifs that automatically load.
  • The transition effects are quite engaging.
  • The presentation looks professional.

CONS:

  • Powtoon only allows you to use one sound. So... you can either only use narration or music.
  • Each slide can only be 20 secs long. (However, this can be seen as a pro since assists in preventing a cognitive overload).
  • With a free account, your presentations will be watermarked with a PowToon logo and contain an advertisement for PowToon at the end.
  • Free members have a limited selection of royalty-free music, images, and templates.
  • Free members don't get HD resolution or the ability to export to an MP4 file.
